Hope you enjoy some of these. The new camera is the real brains behind them. I endeavour to bend it to my will, however.

End of the year

Sun Nov 29, 2009, 6:21 PM
It is upon us, whether we are eager or sad to see it go. For me, this was a great year for my "hobby" - photography. When I was a tad younger, I used an old Argus Rangefinder. Great 35mm film camera. ALL manual with 5 shutter speeds. That was in High School. Later, while I was in the service overseas, I managed to get a Nikon FM with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. Awesome camera, but I think it was a little outside of my league then. Over the years, I started using point and shoots. Not bad cameras, but a tad simple. And I did NOT like having to hold the things away from my eye so I could look at the "rear window". I felt lazy using them. And unsatisfied.

So, Birthday comes this year and I buy myself a D90 with the kit lens (18-105mm)(yeah, I LOVE Nikons as much as others love their Canons)

Since then, I have gotten rather busy. The control an SLR gives (whether D- or film) cannot be beat. (Hasselblads are another matter, so I won't go there)

I try to use PS sparingly, but have become enamoured of Silver Efex Pro as a plug-in. The more I use those tools, I hope that I can learn to manipulate the images with the camera instead, making photographs and and not graphic art. There is a point at which the two mediums meet. How close do you come to it from either direction and remain honest?

A side comment not really related to the above meanderings:

An old college roommate of mine laments the availability of technology to aid the hoi polloi in producing what is known as "stock images". He considers this a death knell for the "real" pros who need patrons for their survival. My feeling is that if their art is good enough, then they don't need to worry about eating. He, it seems to me, is bummed unnecessarily.

Have a great 2010 and remember, Mondays are the days of discovery for what you missed over the weekends. If you dread Mondays at work, get a new job.

Cheers

Considerations!!!

Lifted with kind permission from MickleDesignWerks: [link]

Stock: Please note that my work is not stock. Regardless of your personal opinion about each piece, each one is a finished work of art in its own right.(IF you could call anything I've done "art")

Photo Manipulations: Please respect these works by not taking them without permission for photo manipulations. With that said, it does not mean I will never ever give permission for my work to be manipulated. Just please ask first. Please note that from now on, the old adage that says that it is easier to ask forgiveness than permission does not apply here. If you can not be bothered to ask my permission to use a work of art that I created, then I can not be bothered to be nice about it when you inform me of having done so. I dislike having to be so dictatorial, but come on folks, it is not that hard to send someone a note. Please respect the hard work, hard earned skill and experience that represented in these images by the artists involved in making them. Just ask.

Derivative Works: If you are interested in painting or drawing one of my photographs, please be aware that permission is needed for this as well. The copyright holder (that would be ME) retains the right to create or grant permission to create derivative works. Everything I said above about manipulations applies here. These are finished works that you are asking to paint, not snapshots, and I retain the power of choice regarding what happens to my creations.

Linking/Posting: If you would like to link to something that I have posted, whether words or images, go right ahead. That is always welcome, and you do not need to ask permission. (Though I am always interested, if you want to let me know!) If you do post my images please link back to my web page or the gallery. Also, please do not remove my watermark and do not add logos or watermarks to my images. Posting images elsewhere without a link back and credit given is not okay, and constitutes theft (REALLY!) which will not please me.
